Flight disruptions across the UAE left travelers weighing rebooking, credits and refunds. However, does a non-refundable ticket mean passengers automatically lose their money when an airline cancels a flight? Not necessarily.

A non-refundable fare generally restricts refunds when the passenger chooses to cancel. The situation can be different when the airline cancels the flight or significantly disrupts the itinerary.

Airline Cancelation Can Change the Rules

Current UAE aviation rules provide passenger-welfare protections for cancelations and other disruptions. The Passenger Welfare Program of the General Civil Aviation Authority applies to airlines operating from UAE airports.

Passengers are advised to check the airline's policy on disruptions before accepting the voucher or canceling the booking themselves. The remedy depends on the airline, fare conditions and the circumstances behind the cancelation. Airlines may offer affected passengers a choice between rebooking and a refund, while some disruption policies provide travel credits instead.

Passengers facing a canceled flight should avoid voluntarily canceling their booking before checking the airline's official options. Should the airline have already canceled the service, people should enquire whether their reservation is eligible for an involuntary refund. Making an independent cancelation might lead to restrictions associated with a non-refundable fare.

Future Strategies

People who made a reservation through a travel agent or an online travel agency should also consider processing their refund through that agency. GCAA  developed a Passenger Welfare Program. This deals with the welfare of passengers who are affected due to canceled, delayed, diverted flights and denied boarding. All airlines should have passenger welfare facilities according to the framework.

Dubai also issued an Aviation Consumer Welfare Directive, which developed a framework for passenger rights and responsibilities of airlines and travel agents.
