The US Department of Defense has awarded a $500 million contract to AI startup Scale AI, marking a fivefold increase from the company's previous $100 million contract signed in September 2025. The agreement shows how the Pentagon increasingly depends on artificial intelligence to support its military planning activities, its data analysis, and operational decision-making.
The Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office of the Pentagon will receive support from Scale AI, a San Francisco-based company in which Meta Platforms holds a 49% stake.
Scale AI’s Dan Tadross said, “The Pentagon had already been pushing the limits of the earlier contract. The new agreement reflects the Defense Department’s eagerness to integrate AI tools more widely across military operations.”
Scale AI will also participate in the Defense Innovation Unit's Thunderforge program. This aims to integrate artificial intelligence into military strategic planning and operational execution. The startup is reportedly contributing to President Donald Trump’s proposed Golden Dome homeland defence initiative as well.
Looking ahead, the Pentagon is trying to collaborate with major artificial intelligence companies through its contract with Scale AI. The Defense Department announced two defense agreements last week. The deal will help to develop advanced artificial intelligence systems with OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Amazon Web Services.
In a press release, Kathryn Harris, head of defense at Scale AI, said, “As the era of small-scale AI pilots gives way to enterprise-wide deployment, the infrastructure decisions the Department makes – which platforms to trust, which data operations to invest in, which partners to support for the long term – will shape the operational AI capabilities of the U.S. military for the decade ahead.”
The Pentagon established these agreements to develop an AI-first fighting force, which would decrease military dependency on specific technology suppliers. The company will assist in processing large defense data sets. Moreover, the Pentagon aims to develop advanced AI systems for military decision-making. Amidst the rising AI-powered cyberattacks, the company aims to use AI against AI.
