Why Surging AI Memory Costs Could Push Apple to Hike iPhone Prices Sooner Than Expected?

Apple may not wait until September to raise iPhone, iPad, and Mac prices as AI-driven memory chip shortages push component costs higher across global technology supply chains

Apple is reportedly considering price increases across its product portfolios sooner than previously expected. The reason is not a new feature or a major redesign. Instead, it is the rapidly rising cost of memory and storage chips that is becoming increasingly scarce as artificial intelligence infrastructure expands worldwide.

Recent industry forecasts suggest that Apple could increase prices on iPhones, iPads, and Macs before its traditional September product launch cycle. The pressure stems from a global memory shortage that is affecting technology companies across the industry.

AI Demand is Reshaping the Memory Market

In a post on X, tipster Ice Universe shared, “The rapidly increasing memory prices is a key factor behind the company's urgency. It is the primary reason behind Apple's apparent willingness to raise prices. The potential decision is expected to be implemented even before the launch of the iPhone 18 series, which is likely to be scheduled for the Fall event in September.”

Data center operators and AI companies are buying large amounts of DRAM and storage devices to support their AI models and cloud architectures. This has led to increased demand for memory components.

As chipmakers focus on more lucrative AI projects, less chip output will be allocated to smartphone, tablet, and PC applications. This development has caused memory prices to rise steeply in the past year.

In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple CEO Tim Cook explained the growing challenge. He said the company has spent considerable effort absorbing higher component costs to protect consumers. However, now the situation has become difficult to sustain. According to reports, the price of advanced LPDDR5X memory has recently skyrocketed, increasing pressure on firms that use these components in their products.

Why Macs and iPads Could Move First

Looking ahead, Macs and iPads may see price increases before iPhones. These products rely heavily on memory and storage components, making them more exposed to current supply pressures.

Experts believe that Apple could implement gradual changes to prices prior to the September event instead of announcing major ones at the same time with the launch of the new iPhone. The tech giant may seek to spread the increased cost across several product lines.
