AI and Hydrogen Target Cargo Ship Emissions: Shipping companies are testing new technologies to reduce fuel consumption and emissions from cargo vessels. California-based startup Newlight has developed an AI-guided hydrogen injection system that works with existing diesel engines. Instead of replacing the engine, the technology adds controlled amounts of hydrogen to the combustion process while continuously adjusting performance during a voyage.
Newlight Adds Hydrogen to Existing Engines: Newlight’s system is designed as a retrofit for conventional marine diesel engines. An AI-driven controller monitors factors including combustion pressure, exhaust temperature and air intake pressure. It then adjusts hydrogen injection as engine conditions change. The approach allows vessels to use hydrogen alongside diesel rather than requiring a complete switch to a hydrogen-only propulsion system.
First Long-Range Voyage Delivered Key Results: Newlight tested its technology on a Lomar Shipping bulk carrier during an 8,500-nautical-mile voyage from Singapore to Ghana. According to the startup, the system reduced fuel consumption by 24% and carbon dioxide emissions by 28% during the voyage. The trial provided a real-world test of the technology under operating conditions at sea.
AI Controls Hydrogen Injection in Real Time: The technology uses AI to continuously identify when and how much hydrogen should enter the engine. The system monitors engine conditions and changes hydrogen flow as vessel load, speed and operating conditions shift. This real-time control is designed to improve combustion efficiency while allowing the existing diesel engine to continue operating when hydrogen is unavailable.
Retrofit Design Could Make Adoption Easier: A major part of Newlight’s approach is its retrofit design. The startup says the system can be installed in less than two weeks without requiring a dry dock or major engine modifications. This could make the technology easier to test on existing vessels, which is important as much of the global shipping fleet will continue operating for years.
Newlight Plans to Expand Across More Vessels: Newlight says it has signed agreements to install its hydrogen-injection system on 12 vessels across multiple companies, with broader fleet rollouts planned for 2027. The startup also raised a $9 million seed round from investors including lomarlabs, BIRD Energy, Undeterred Capital, CiRi Ventures and Fusion VC to support its development.
