Apple and Samsung are adopting a wider foldable phone design that Huawei introduced earlier. This shift shows how major smartphone brands are approaching the category. Apple entered the segment with the iPhone Duo, while Samsung also moved towards a wider format.
The iPhone Duo uses a wide-screen design with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 also moves towards a wider screen compared with the company’s taller foldable models. Huawei introduced a similar passport-style design with the Pura X in China in March 2025.
Huawei developed several foldable designs over the years. Its portfolio includes flip phones, book-style models, passport-shaped devices and a tri-fold smartphone. The company also focused on improving durability, cameras and multitasking features across its newer models. The Pura X featured a 6.3-inch inner display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. When folded, its shape was similar to a passport. It also had a 3.5-inch outer display for basic apps and notifications.
Huawei later launched the Pura X Max in April 2026. The newer model comes with a 7.7-inch inner screen and a 5.4-inch outer display. Its screen sizes are close to those found on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 and Apple’s iPhone Duo. The wider format offers more usable screen space for video and commonly used apps. It also provides a different viewing experience from taller foldable displays.
Camera performance is a challenge for foldable phones. Their hinges, dual displays and slim construction can make camera hardware harder to accommodate. Apple’s iPhone Duo uses a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra-wide camera. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 has a 50MP main camera and an ultra-wide camera. Huawei pushed its Pura X Max further with a triple rear camera setup. It includes a 50MP telephoto camera and a 50MP second-generation Red Maple imaging system.
The Pura X Max also carries a 5,300mAh battery. It supports 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Huawei added a new folding mechanism and second-generation Kunlun Glass to improve durability. The source also reports speculation about a global launch for the Pura X Max.
