OpenAI has added iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins to ChatGPT, allowing users to search emails, check schedules and update calendar events by asking the chatbot. The new features bring Apple's email and calendar services to ChatGPT, alongside Google's Gmail and Google Calendar.
OpenAI announced the integrations on October 27. They are available on ChatGPT's web, desktop and iOS platforms, with a gradual global rollout. Users on all ChatGPT plans, including the free tier, can access the new plugins.
Users can ask ChatGPT to find particular emails, summarize messages and check upcoming appointments. They can also use the calendar plugin to add or change events through the chatbot.
Users must connect iCloud Mail and Calendar separately through ChatGPT's settings. Each service requires its own app-specific password instead of the regular Apple account password. Connecting iCloud Mail does not automatically connect iCloud Calendar.
The email plugin supports addresses ending in icloud.com, me.com and mac.com. The calendar plugin uses the default email address linked to the user's Apple account. Both plugins also allow ChatGPT to view contacts, but they cannot make changes to them. The new integrations do not include separate contact management or support for Apple's Reminders app.
Company and school accounts may not be able to use the plugins if their administrators have blocked access. Users should also check their data settings before connecting their accounts. OpenAI says information from connected apps may be used to train its models if the ‘improve the model for everyone’ setting is turned on.
The new plugins also work with OpenAI's Dots agent for Pro subscribers. Users can ask Dots to help set up the connections and use supported email and calendar features. However, it is not yet clear how well the plugins work with other ChatGPT features, including Work and Codex. More testing is needed to understand their full capabilities.
The launch adds Apple's iCloud services to the range of tools that users can connect to ChatGPT. It also makes it easier for people who use iCloud to search emails and manage their schedules without switching between different apps. Users can complete these tasks by asking ChatGPT to help them. Neither plugin connects automatically to a user's account. Users must choose to connect iCloud Mail and Calendar themselves, giving them control over whether ChatGPT can access these services.
