OpenAI rolled out Images 2.6, its latest image-generation model, across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API. The update brings animated GIF creation to the platform while making image generation up to 50% faster.
The company said the new model helps users turn ideas into visuals more quickly. It also improves the quality and consistency of generated and edited images.
The biggest addition is GIF generation. Users can now create short animations from a text prompt or turn uploaded images into moving GIFs. The feature supports use cases such as animated mascots, character clips, product visuals, and social media content.
Users can also adjust playback speed and edit the resulting animation. This makes the tool more useful for creators, marketers, and small businesses that need lightweight motion content without dedicated video-production software.
OpenAI said Images 2.6 generates images 50% faster than the previous version. The company has also focused on maintaining visual consistency during edits, especially for characters, products, and brand elements.
The model allows users to retain reference images of people, pets, and characters. They can reuse these references in future generations instead of uploading the same image repeatedly.
OpenAI introduced two API models alongside Images 2.6. GPT-Image-2.6 Flare prioritizes speed and can generate an image in as little as six seconds at low quality. GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst focuses on higher-quality output and stronger editing consistency at medium and high quality.
The dual-model approach gives developers flexibility. Teams can choose Flare for rapid prototyping and high-volume tasks, while Sunburst suits premium creative work and brand-sensitive campaigns.
The launch signals OpenAI’s push to make generative AI more practical for everyday creative work. By combining speed, animation, and editing control, the company is positioning ChatGPT as a broader visual-content tool rather than only a text assistant.
