Disney is bringing its famous storytelling and theme-park experience to the UAE, with Disneyland Abu Dhabi planned for Yas Island. The project, announced by The Walt Disney Company and Miral in May 2025, will become Disneyโs first theme park resort in the Middle East.
Although the park is still in the development and design phase, interest has grown rapidly as more details about the project and its location emerge. The resort is expected to strengthen Yas Islandโs position as one of the regionโs leading entertainment destinations.
In the newly released documentary Disney Worldbuilders, company CEO Bob Iger shot at the future site of Disneyโs first theme park resort in Abu Dhabi and discussed the rationale for selecting the location.
The upcoming resort will sit on the waterfront of Yas Island, alongside the islandโs existing attractions and entertainment venues. Disney and Miral have described the location as an important gateway for visitors from the Middle East, Africa, India, Asia and Europe.
Yas Island already attracts visitors with major theme parks and leisure destinations. The arrival of Disney is expected to add another major international attraction to the growing tourism ecosystem.
Disney has not yet released a complete list of rides or themed lands. However, the official announcement says the destination will include signature Disney entertainment, themed accommodation, dining, retail and immersive storytelling experiences.
One element already highlighted is the resortโs planned modern castle, which is expected to give the Abu Dhabi destination its own visual identity. Disney has also indicated that the project will combine its established storytelling style with Abu Dhabiโs cultural and futuristic character. The park is being designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, while Miral will develop, own and operate the destination under its agreement with Disney.
This remains one of the biggest unanswered questions. Disney has not announced an official opening date. Current reports place the project in the early 2030s, but visitors should treat those timelines as estimates rather than a confirmed launch date.
The absence of a firm date is not surprising given the scale of the development. Disney is expected to reveal more about attractions, hotels, entertainment and construction progress as the project moves forward.
Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism โ Abu Dhabi and Chairman of Miral, made it clear in the documentary that the emirate's ambitions stretch beyond simply adding another blockbuster attraction to Yas Island.
โHere in Abu Dhabi, weโre investing significantly in the creative industries. Because we believe in the creative mind. Itโs so powerful. Itโs what connects us. Whether it was Star Wars or the world of Marvel or Pixar. The world of Disney in itself, itโs just unbelievable. You are bringing amazing experiences to life,โ Al Mubarak said.

Disneyโs decision aligns with Abu Dhabiโs growing ambitions in tourism and entertainment. Yas Island has developed into a major leisure hub, and the addition of a Disney destination could further increase its international appeal. The project also gives Disney an opportunity to create a park specifically suited to the region rather than simply reproducing one of its existing destinations.
โWe studied different parts of the world that we could expand into. A factor immediately jumps out: location. About one-third of the worldโs population, actually, can get here within four hours,โ Iger said in the documentary.
For now, Disneyland Abu Dhabi remains a project to watch rather than an attraction visitors can book. However, with Disney, Miral, and Yas Island behind the development, it is already shaping up to be one of the UAEโs most closely watched entertainment projects.
