Qualcomm officially moved its flagship smartphone chips to a 2nm manufacturing process with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series. The company introduced two versions this year: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Both are designed to bring faster performance, improved efficiency, and more advanced on-device AI to upcoming premium Android phones.

Why the 2nm Process Matters

The shift to 2nm is one of the biggest changes in the new Snapdragon generation. A smaller manufacturing process lets chip designers fit more transistors into the same space while improving power efficiency.

For the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, Qualcomm claimed a 10% CPU performance improvement and a 37% gain in power efficiency over the previous generation. Its Adreno GPU is claimed to be 35% faster while offering a 40% efficiency improvement.

For smartphone users, the practical difference could show up in gaming, battery life, and sustained performance rather than simply higher benchmark numbers.

AI Gets a Bigger Role

AI is another major focus of the new platform. Qualcomm redesigned its Hexagon NPU for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, with the chip supporting more complex AI processing directly on the phone.

The company said that its AI engine can deliver up to 20% better performance per watt for agentic AI workloads. According to Qualcomm's specifications, the platform is also designed to support on-device AI models with more than 30 billion parameters.

This means future phones could handle more AI tasks without constantly sending information to cloud servers. Qualcomm is pitching the technology for personal assistants that can understand context, respond to requests, and perform multi-step actions across apps.

Gaming, Cameras and Connectivity

Gaming also gets a significant upgrade. The new Adreno architecture supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, while Qualcomm's Adreno Neural Fusion combines AI processing, upscaling and frame generation to improve graphics.

Camera capabilities have also been expanded, including support for up to 8K video recording and advanced image-processing features. Connectivity gets an upgrade through Qualcomm's X105 5G modem, which supports peak download speeds of up to 14.8Gbps, along with FastConnect 8800 and Wi-Fi 8 support.
