Samsung adopted a refinement-first approach with its latest clamshell foldable, Galaxy Z Flip 8. Rather than making a radical change to the design, the company focused on improving the areas that matter in everyday use, including the hinge, weight, battery efficiency, cameras and software.
The result is a Flip model that keeps the familiar foldable design while adding more practical functionality to the cover screen. Samsung’s latest device runs Android 17 with One UI 9 and puts greater emphasis on Galaxy AI and the FlexWindow experience.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 retains Samsung’s familiar clamshell design but is thinner and lighter than its predecessor. At 180 grams, it is the lightest Flip model in the series, making it easier to carry and use one-handed.
Samsung also redesigned the hinge mechanism. Changes to the hinge tension and magnets are intended to make opening and closing the phone smoother. The device continues to use a premium build with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and an Armor Aluminum frame, while its IP48 rating provides protection against water and limited dust exposure.
The phone features a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display and a 4.1-inch FlexWindow. The display specifications remain familiar, but Samsung has refined the overall experience, including the visibility of the fold crease.
Samsung retained a 50-megapixel main camera and 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor, choosing software improvements instead of a major camera hardware overhaul. The latest ProVisual Engine handles image processing, with Samsung focusing on color, detail and dynamic range.
The FlexCam remains central to the Flip experience. Users can partially fold the phone to capture hands-free photographs and videos without needing a separate stand. The phone also uses silicon-carbon battery technology while retaining a 4,300mAh capacity. Wired charging remains at 25W, with 15W wireless charging.
One of the biggest changes comes through software. With One UI 9 based on Android 17, Samsung has made the FlexWindow more capable than a simple notification panel. Users can access widgets, applications and quick controls directly from the cover display. Features such as Now Brief, Gemini Live and Now Nudge add AI-powered assistance to the smaller screen, helping users access information and perform tasks without constantly unfolding the phone.
Samsung is also using AI for more context-aware interactions, including reminders and assistance based on what users are doing.

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 represents an evolutionary step rather than a complete redesign. Samsung has concentrated on making the existing formula lighter, smoother and more useful.
For owners of earlier Flip models, the changes may not represent a dramatic shift. However, the improved hinge, refined camera processing, battery technology and expanded FlexWindow functionality show how Samsung is trying to make foldable phones more practical for everyday use.
