The first modern desktop PC to ship with Valve's SteamOS has officially entered the market. US-based system builder META PCs has introduced the STEAMROLLER. This is a prebuilt gaming desktop that comes with SteamOS pre-installed instead of Windows.
The launch highlights Valve's recent expansion of SteamOS support beyond the Steam Deck. It also marks a major step in making Linux gaming more accessible to mainstream PC users.
STEAMROLLER is equipped with the AMD Ryzen 5 9600X chip and Radeon RX 7600 graphics. This computer system is optimized to provide a flawless 1080p gaming experience as well as the versatility typical of a conventional PC.
Users can upgrade the graphics card, memory, storage, and the processor itself if they desire. In addition, users can install any other operating system if they prefer. META PCs combines modern AMD hardware with SteamOS to provide a plug-and-play gaming experience
Valve recently released SteamOS 3.8.10 with official support for compatible desktop systems. The latest release expands hardware compatibility and simplifies installation on standard PCs.
Valve first introduced Steam Machines more than a decade ago, but the initiative struggled given limited game compatibility and fragmented hardware offerings.
Since then, things have changed drastically. Valve's Proton compatibility layer allows many of these games to run on the Linux OS easily and without any additional effort from the users' side. The recent launch of the Steam Machine also adds to the credibility of the SteamOS platform for games.
The development of SteamOS-powered desktop computers is yet another sign of interest in gaming computers based on Linux. With time, more vendors supporting the OS will provide an alternative for gamers to Windows, without losing access to their games.
