Microsoft has reportedly suspended signing new deals with third-party game makers for Xbox Game Pass amid a review into the future of its gaming division. Although Microsoft has not officially announced the suspension, multiple reports suggest the company has paused negotiations with several game developers.
Microsoft has remained silent on the claims. Xbox continues to reorganize after the leadership change and new strategies for its Game Pass prices and content. This appears to be prompting speculation that the company is reconsidering its investment in third-party game passes.
Looking ahead, not all industry sources believe Microsoft is permanently stepping away from third-party Game Pass deals. According to Jez Corden from Windows Central, the company has informed him that there has been no broad decision to stop funding third-party Game Pass titles.
If accurate, the reported pause would mainly affect new, unsigned agreements rather than games already scheduled for release on Game Pass.
For subscribers, there is no immediate impact. Existing titles and previously announced games would not be affected by any of the reports. However, if negotiations remain paused for an extended period, fewer third-party games will be added to the Game Pass library in the next few months.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Business of Video Games podcast, Fernando Rizo, a partner at Caboodle Games, said, “Microsoft had likely paused signing off on third-party Xbox Game Pass deals, at least for the time being.
Rizo cited conversations with several developers who were in advanced talks with the Xbox parent over Game Pass deals for their titles. While no deals had been inked, the developers “got the rug pulled out from under them.” However, until Microsoft makes a public announcement, all the reports remain unconfirmed.
