YouTube is allowing users to send private messages within the platform after a seven-year gap. The company has introduced a new system that combines direct communication with enhanced security features. The new upgrade is available to users aged 18 and older in the United States and select global regions. This marks a reversal of YouTube's earlier decision to abandon private messaging in 2019.

YouTube Brings Back Private Messaging With New Safety Guardrails

YouTube said in its announcement, “ Our community loves to share videos with their friends and family, and we want them to be able to do it in one place. Users frequently share music videos, tutorials, Shorts, and other content through external messaging platforms, and the new feature aims to simplify that process.”

YouTube further explained that users often share videos, Shorts, tutorials, and livestreams via other messaging applications. The purpose of introducing this new function is to bring such communications into the YouTube platform.

There is a new button called ‘Messages’ on the application. With this update, users can engage in conversations, share video links, and discuss videos without leaving the platform. This function comes after a trial period initiated in December 2025.

Safety Tools Remain Central: Focus on Invite-Only Model

YouTube has revamped the way that conversation can be initiated. It requires that users create an invitation link and send it via other messaging services. The recipient has the option to accept or reject the invite before engaging in conversation. Invitation links are valid for seven days.

Unlike its previous messaging system, the new version requires age verification before users can access chats. Only verified users aged 18 or older can use the feature. The requirement reflects YouTube’s broader effort to strengthen user protection and reduce unwanted interactions on the platform. YouTube said it plans to expand access based on user feedback as it continues refining the feature.

The new feature is designed to encourage conversations among friends and family rather than strangers. Features like delete, unsend, block, and report have been integrated. All conversations are subject to the YouTube Community Guidelines.
