Apple Bets on Brain-Sensing Tech with Sonera Acquisition

Apple’s acquisition of Sonera could mark a new step in the company’s wearable-health ambitions. Sonera has developed sensing technology designed to detect weak magnetic signals from neural and muscular activity.

Apple acquired California-based startup Sonera, a company working on technology designed to detect magnetic signals produced by the brain and body. The deal was not publicly announced by either company but emerged through a European Commission disclosure related to Apple's acquisition activity.

The acquisition gives Apple access to Sonera's work in biomagnetic sensing, an area that could eventually complement the health and accessibility features already found across its wearable ecosystem.

Technology Can Detect Magnetic Signals

Sonera developed a chip-based sensing approach that measures weak magnetic fields generated by neural and muscular activity. Unlike conventional electrical sensing techniques, the technology is designed to collect this information without requiring direct contact with the skin.

The startup previously described its technology as a potential way to make brain activity easier to measure, much like other physiological signals such as heart rate and temperature. Its S1 chip was developed with wearable applications in mind, including muscle sensing.

The technology could have applications ranging from monitoring neuromuscular conditions and tracking physical performance to controlling assistive devices.

Future Apple Watch and Vision Pro Uses

Apple has not revealed how it intends to use Sonera's technology, so any product plans remain speculative. However, the acquisition could support future developments in Apple's health and accessibility ambitions.

One possibility is more sophisticated sensing through the Apple Watch, allowing the device to gather additional information about muscle or neural activity. The technology could also eventually contribute to hands-free or thought-based controls for devices such as the Vision Pro, although such applications are not confirmed.

Sonera's approach could be particularly interesting because it aims to make neural sensing more compact and practical for consumer devices rather than relying on large clinical equipment.

A Potential New Direction for Wearables

Apple steadily expanded the health capabilities of its wearable products, and the Sonera acquisition suggests the company is exploring sensing technologies beyond traditional heart-rate, temperature, and motion measurements.

For now, there is no indication that Sonera's technology will appear in an upcoming Apple product. The acquisition instead appears to give Apple an early foothold in a developing field where brain and muscle signals could eventually become another source of data for wearable devices.
