A new ad-blocking tool, Filtr, is extending content filtering beyond browsers on Apple devices. The application developed by Kaylee Serena Calderolla uses a system-level feature introduced in iOS 26 and macOS 26.
It marks one of the first attempts to block ads across apps on iPhones, iPads, and Macs, not just within Safari. While traditional ad blockers focus on browser traffic, Filtr targets system-wide network activity across Apple devices.
Ad blockers have long been used to reduce tracking and improve browsing speed. However, most tools are limited to web browsers and do not affect advertisements within mobile apps.
Filtr closes this gap through Apple’s URL filtering framework, a feature introduced in the latest software updates. It allows developers to restrict access to specific web addresses at the network level. This enables Filtr to block certain ad requests before they load across apps and services on Apple devices.
According to its developer, Filtr is the first known application to use Apple’s URL filter feature at scale. The system relies on a continuously updated blocklist stored locally on the device and synced via Wipr’s infrastructure.
When a request is made, the system checks a local pre-filter list. If a match is found, the block is confirmed through a server-side check. These requests are routed through Apple servers to prevent exposure of user identity to external parties.
The design aims to balance ad blocking with privacy protections while limiting data collection from third-party developers.
The developer states that both Wipr and Filtr are built without collecting personal data. The filtering system operates without requiring access to user-specific information.
Filtr can reduce ad exposure in many apps, although it does not block ads served directly from an app’s own domain. Platforms such as Facebook, Google, and Reddit may still display ads when they are embedded within their native systems.
Some app functions may also restrict filtering to avoid breaking core features, according to the developer.
Filtr is offered as a paid extension to the Wipr ecosystem. It is priced at $5 annually or $25 for a lifetime purchase through in-app payment. Wipr itself is a $5 universal app available across Apple devices.
The developer says maintaining the system requires continuous updates to blocklists and ongoing compatibility with Apple’s platform changes.
Filtr highlights a broader shift toward privacy tools operating at the system level rather than within individual apps. It also reflects increasing use of Apple’s newer developer frameworks for network control and content filtering.
While the tool does not eliminate all ads across apps, it signals a new phase in how users may control data tracking across Apple’s ecosystem.
