Google has expanded its Google Home platform with a new AI-powered automation feature that allows cameras to trigger smart home actions based on what they actually see. The update uses Gemini AI’s visual understanding to identify real-world situations instead of relying only on basic motion detection.

How Do Camera Starters Work?

The feature introduces ‘camera starters,’ which let users create automation routines using natural language descriptions. Users can ask the system to react when a package appears near the front door, a car enters the driveway, or an animal gets into the trash area.

Once the selected event is detected, Google Home can automatically perform actions across connected devices. These actions include turning on lights, sending alerts through smart speakers, or activating other smart home products linked to the system.

Gemini Expands Camera Intelligence

Traditional smart home automations mostly depend on simple categories like person, motion, or vehicle detection. Google’s latest update pushes the system further by allowing cameras to understand more detailed visual scenes. Users can create routines by typing a description of the event they want the camera to monitor. The platform then uses Gemini AI to interpret the scene and trigger the assigned automation.

The feature currently works with Nest cameras and selected third-party cameras that support Gemini Built-in features. Google confirmed support for the onn outdoor camera plug-in. The company confirmed the update allows automations to react to ‘anything your camera observes,’ giving users more flexible control over smart home routines.

Part of Google’s Bigger AI Push

The rollout follows several recent Gemini-focused updates across the Google Home ecosystem. Earlier this month, the tech giant introduced Gemini 3.1 support for its voice assistant, along with a redesigned camera interface featuring animated zoom previews. The company also expanded automation support for devices, including robot vacuums, smart lighting systems, and home security products.

Google’s upgraded assistant can now handle multiple actions through a single voice command. The company has also previewed Ask Home for web browsers, which will let users search camera history and build automations online. The new camera automation tools require a Google Home Premium subscription. The feature is currently rolling out to public preview users.

What This Means

Google’s latest update to Google Home marks a clear step toward more intelligent smart home systems. Gemini AI-powered camera detection brings the ability to initiate instant automated actions based on typical events like deliveries, movements, or other abnormal activity. This feature enhances home security, boosts convenience, and fosters a more organic interaction between users and connected devices.
