Apple is working on a second-generation iPhone Air for a spring 2027 release. The company plans to introduce the smartphone alongside iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, as it shifts its focus to ultra-thin products. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman’s report, Apple has placed iPhone Air 2 back on its roadmap. The news has eased concerns of delay or cancellation following a modest demand for the first version released in September 2025.

Advanced Testing and Camera System Set

Internal prototypes, reportedly codenamed V62, are already in the advanced testing phase. Instead of a major redesign, the tech giant is focusing on specific upgrades to address concerns previously raised by users.

The most notable change under consideration is a second rear camera. The current iPhone Air carries a single 48MP rear sensor that drew criticism for its limited versatility. The next version is expected to add an ultrawide lens alongside the main camera.

Apple is reportedly not planning a telephoto lens at this stage. The upgrade is aimed at expanding everyday photography options while keeping the device compact.

Battery Performance and Design Continuity

Battery life is also a key area of work. Apple is exploring multiple approaches to extend usage time without significantly altering the phone’s design. Possible improvements include efficient chip performance, software optimization, and refinements in display power management.

A larger battery design appears constrained by the phone’s compact nature. iPhone Air 2 is also expected to use a variant of the A20 Pro chip, planned for Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro models. The focus remains on performance gains.

Reshapes Release Calendar and Ultra-Thin Segment

Apple has recently changed its iPhone launch schedule. The company plans to launch its premium models, including iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone, during the autumn window. Standard models like iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and the updated iPhone Air are expected to arrive in spring 2027. This new approach spreads product launches across the year.

The renewed push for iPhone Air 2 signals Apple’s continued interest in ultra-slim smartphones even as demand patterns remain mixed. The first-generation model prioritized a sleek look at the cost of camera flexibility and battery capacity. The company appears to be betting on incremental upgrades rather than a design shift.

Outlook

iPhone Air 2 is shaping up as a refinement-focused update rather than a major overhaul. Apple’s strategy centres on improving usability while preserving the slim look. The product’s success will likely depend on whether the added camera and battery improvements can address previous criticism without compromising its core design identity.
