Meta has introduced a new AI-powered Business Agent within WhatsApp. This marks a major step into the enterprise AI market as the tech giant aims to compete with rivals such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

The new feature was showcased during Meta’s Conversations conference in London. The company also plans to transform business messaging into a full-scale AI-driven operations platform.

Meta Expands AI Ambitions Beyond Consumer Applications

According to multiple reports, More than one million businesses have already used earlier versions of its AI business chatbots on WhatsApp and Messenger. There will be a global rollout for organizations of all sizes, initially offering the tool for free before introducing subscription-based pricing in the coming months.

The new Business Agent goes beyond traditional chatbots by offering agentic capabilities that allow it to perform actions on behalf of businesses. This includes:

  • Answer customer questions

  • Qualify leads

  • Book appointments

  • Process orders

  • Close sales.

The system can also escalate complex customer issues to human representatives when necessary. Meta says their AI assistant can fit a company’s style, brand, and workflow. It'll work on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram too. Businesses can then handle customer messages across all these platforms using just this one AI tool.

Enterprise Platform Targets Larger Organizations

Alongside the Business Agent, Meta rolled out a broader Business Agent Platform. This platform integrates with third-party systems like Shopify and Zendesk. It's aimed at large firms, providing them with the controls, guidelines, and measurement tools needed for custom AI workflows.

Experts suggest that this rollout highlights Meta's plan to find new ways to earn money beyond online ads. With WhatsApp's massive user base and business messaging becoming profitable, AI agents look like a key growth area. Even CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes that these AI agents might one day be as vital for businesses as having a website or email.
