Abu Dhabi’s state-owned energy company ADNOC and artificial intelligence firm G42 have signed a multi-year agreement with OpenAI. The deal will bring advanced AI capabilities into ADNOC’s operations and make it the first energy company in the world to deploy OpenAI Frontier.

The agreement was signed during OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman’s visit to Abu Dhabi. It was witnessed by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, at ADIPEC, the UAE’s flagship energy exhibition.

AI to Power Energy Decisions

Under the partnership, ADNOC will integrate OpenAI’s GPT models with its industrial data and technical expertise. The company expects the technology to connect operational, investment and commercial decisions across its energy business.

The systems will run on in-country inference infrastructure in the UAE. G42’s subsidiary, Inception42, will support the deployment. ADNOC said the first application will focus on oil and gas field-development planning, where AI agents could help engineers and planners assess complex choices faster.

The agreement also covers cybersecurity and employee training. ADNOC aims to use AI to improve safety, efficiency and decision-making across its value chain.

A First For the Energy Sector

OpenAI Frontier is a platform designed to build and coordinate AI agents across large organisations. ADNOC said it will become the first energy company to deploy the platform, marking a significant step in the use of generative AI in oil and gas.

The deal signals Abu Dhabi’s ambition to turn artificial intelligence into a core industrial capability. It also strengthens ADNOC’s stated goal of becoming the world’s most technology- and AI-enabled energy company.

Mubadala, Inception42 and OpenAI also signed an agreement to apply AI to investment analysis, opportunity identification and risk evaluation. In addition, the Abu Dhabi government signed an agreement to explore AI use in public services, including food-import permit review.
