OpenAI has added one of the world's most respected mathematicians to its research team. Jacob Tsimerman, who recently won the 2026 Fields Medal, has confirmed that he is joining the AI company. The move comes as OpenAI continues to strengthen its research division with experts from fields beyond traditional computer science.

Before joining OpenAI, Tsimerman was a professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto and the Canada Research Chair in Number Theory. Reportedly, he is taking a break but will remain a faculty member at the university.

He is known for his work in arithmetic geometry and number theory. And ironically, he had warned against replacing human thinking with AI before. His new role will be more about safety than capability, according to reports. According to him, AI advancement is going well, but the safety side has far more unfinished work and fewer employees working on it.

AI Research is Becoming More Like Frontier Science

Getting a Fields Medalist in the lab shows you how far AI research has come. Building advanced AI is not just a matter of writing better software anymore. Now it is a matter of solving difficult scientific and mathematical problems, which requires profound research.

Firms such as OpenAI are throwing money at the best scientists, as the AI of the future may require as much inspiration from new mathematical ideas as it does from more powerful computers. This brings AI closer to fields such as physics and pure mathematics, where breakthroughs can take years of research.

As AI becomes more advanced, partnerships between computer science and mathematics could play a major role in shaping the next generation of intelligent systems.
