OpenAI has finally unveiled that its first branded hardware product will be a compact device for developers. The AI giant will launch Codex Micro on July 15, officially entering hardware with a product designed to improve AI-assisted coding rather than compete in the smartphone market.

OpenAI showcased the device during the AI Engineer World Fair in San Francisco. The launch comes as the company continues to expand its AI ecosystem beyond software and into purpose-built hardware.

OpenAI Debuts its First Hardware Product

Codex Micro is a joint venture between OpenAI and the peripheral manufacturing company Work Louder, known for its products including programmable keyboards and macro pads. Instead of serving as a traditional keyboard, the small device is essentially a programmable controller allowing developers easy access to Codex commands and macros.

The product seems to be similar to the Creator Micro 2 by Work Louder and comes with mechanical keys, a joystick, and a touchpad. The exact list of features of the gadget has yet to be revealed, but the companies say it is designed to improve interaction with their AI coding assistant through this new product.

The launch represents more than a new accessory. Experts suggest that Codex Micro targets professional developers who rely on Codex for software engineering tasks. The device reflects OpenAI's strategy of creating specialized hardware for specific AI workflows before expanding into broader consumer products.

A Strategic Move Beyond Software

This launch highlights OpenAI's aim to upgrade not only the AI but also the hardware that facilitates the experience for users. With the introduction of a device meant to interact with Codex, OpenAI is ensuring that AI is more deeply integrated into the workflow of developers rather than being used as a standalone chatbot.

Details such as pricing and market availability have not been revealed yet. However, Work Louder's Creator Micro 2 is priced at approximately $199. OpenAI has not announced pricing, some industry observers expect Codex Micro to target a similar market segment.  Specifications of the device are set to be unveiled officially in July
