Elon Musk's SpaceX might be developing an AI-powered handheld device slimmer than Apple's iPhone. This has triggered fresh speculation about the company's consumer hardware ambitions. However, Musk denied the claims, calling them ‘utterly false.’ leaving the tech industry divided over whether the project exists.

The controversy comes after The Wall Street Journal reported that SpaceX privately showcased an early AI device prototype to investors ahead of its recent IPO. Reportedly, the handset-like gadget features a sleek, ultra-thin design and represents Musk's latest effort to expand beyond rockets, satellite internet, and artificial intelligence.

Elon Musk Rejects Claims of Secret AI Device

The rumored device is supposed to use a proprietary OS rather than Android or iOS, according to sources. The alleged gadget would use AI features from xAI and Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets to operate.

According to sources privy to the presentation, the project was only at an early stage. In fact, they have stated that the device might undergo considerable design changes or be scrapped before commercial manufacturing. Neither SpaceX nor Qualcomm has verified these claimed specifications yet. Assuming the reports to be correct, the new device would be a part of the larger Musk family of devices. All thanks to upgraded AI features and Starlink connectivity.

AI Hardware Race Continues

This is not the first time Musk has denied speculation about developing a smartphone. Though he has repeatedly stated that making a phone is not among his top priorities, there have been statements that he will do so if necessary.

The reported SpaceX project comes in an era when tech companies are increasingly investigating dedicated hardware for AI. Tech giants are moving away from regular smartphones and trying to invent something better to interact with digital assistants.

Experts suggest that the recent launches of AI hardware have failed to win popularity and attract users. Thus, creating doubt among users that SpaceX actually plans to compete in this market.
