Tesla is set to unveil its redesigned Roadster electric sports car on Thursday, October 15, marking a major milestone for one of the company's longest-delayed vehicle programs. The automaker first showcased the next-generation model in November 2017 and initially promised deliveries in 2020. However, repeated postponements have kept the car away from customers.
The latest launch will take place at the SpaceX test facility in McGregor, Texas. Tesla originally planned the event for October 1. However, it was postponed after forecasts of severe weather. The company said the outdoor event required a change in schedule.
When Tesla first introduced the Roadster, it announced a starting price of around USD 200,000 and began accepting reservations with deposits of USD 50,000. The company did not announce an updated price.
The original performance targets were ambitious. Elon Musk said the four-seat sports car would offer a driving range of around 620 miles (1,000 km) on a single charge. He later claimed the redesigned version could accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than a second. The target was linked to the proposed SpaceX technology package.
These figures remain announced targets rather than independently verified production specifications. The launch will provide more clarity on the vehicle's final design and capabilities.
The Roadster has also attracted attention for its proposed connection with SpaceX. Musk has previously discussed using cold-gas thrusters to improve acceleration and vehicle control. Recent reports suggest the demonstration could feature a special version equipped with the technology.
However, claims about the car lifting off the ground or achieving flight-like capabilities should be treated cautiously until Tesla demonstrates them. The company has yet to establish the final specifications and availability of such a package.
