Chinese AI startup Moonshot launched Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight AI model, the world's largest of its kind. The release marks a major milestone for China's AI industry as it pushes to compete with leading US companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic. The shift follows the debut of Z.ai's GLM-5.2, which stunned industry observers by scoring near top US closed-source ‌models on benchmark tests.

China Unveils its Biggest Open AI Model Yet

According to the company, “Kimi K3 introduces architectural improvements that increase computing efficiency while enabling long-horizon coding with minimal human supervision. The model is built to support developers working on autonomous AI agents, enterprise applications, and complex research tasks.”

The tech giant further claims that Kimi K3 provides state-of-the-art performance for reasoning ability, software development, and other knowledge-intensive tasks. The model also has a million-token context window. This helps the model work on much larger datasets and prompts than previous versions.

The results of both internal and external testing show that Kimi K3 is one of the most powerful AI models today. It scored very high on independent benchmarking platforms in web interface development, coding, and multi-stage reasoning alongside several top US proprietary models.

Market Reacts to Moonshot's Announcement

Moonshot’s most recent product has been met with immediate effects within China’s AI industry. Share prices for its competitors in the AI business have fallen in reaction to the news of Kimi K3’s benchmark achievement and growing momentum.

The company has also raised $2 billion in financing at a valuation of almost $30 billion in preparation for a possible Hong Kong IPO. This demonstrates the confidence that investors place in China’s growing ambition in AI technology.

Kimi K3 reflects the intensifying global AI competition between China and the United States. Although American companies still dominate some proprietary frontier models, China is quickly catching up with its advancements in open-weight AI.
