Samsung is all set to take its next big step in smartphone innovation by developing a commercial rollable handset that expands into a 10-inch display. The device could arrive in the first half of 2028. This would be a major step ahead in Samsung's latest attempt to redefine premium smartphones as competition in the foldable segment intensifies.
The tech giant has highlighted rollable display concepts for years. But the latest reports suggest Samsung has now moved beyond prototypes and is working toward commercial production.
As reported by South Korean publication Maeil Business, “Samsung Display has stepped up work on rollable display technology, aiming to bring its first commercial rollable smartphone to market in the first half of 2028. The device is currently being developed as Samsung's next major display innovation.”
Unlike foldable smartphones, a rollable display extends outward from inside the chassis. Moreover, there’s no visible crease, which is typical of folding screens. As of now, the company has not provided official confirmation; industry sources say it may launch under the Galaxy Z Slide brand name. It is also expected to feature a 10-inch OLED display when fully extended. It may use a 16:9 aspect ratio and offer a pixel density of around 440 pixels per inch.
This larger screen might attract people interested in higher productivity, gaming and entertainment without having to carry a separate tablet. There has been no announcement from Samsung regarding the device's technical and software capabilities.
Samsung's reported move comes as competition in the premium foldable market continues to grow. Industry sources show that Samsung’s market share in the foldable display panel market has dropped in recent quarters, pushing the firm to explore other product types.
Rollable smartphones are among the most complex consumer electronics products currently under development. This complexity stems from the difficulty of producing flexible OLED panels that can repeatedly expand and retract without affecting image quality or durability.
Industry reports suggest Samsung plans to introduce its first rollable smartphone by mid-2028. The long period before the phone's release may reflect Samsung’s concerns about the production process and the product's long-term performance.
