The United Arab Emirates has denied reports suggesting an extension of distance learning till May 1, calling them inaccurate and reaffirming its current education policy framework.

Periods of uncertainty about school operations often lead to unofficial notices circulating rapidly within parent WhatsApp groups before formal guidance is issued.

What the Reports Claimed

When schools across UAE transitioned to online education this year, the transition was far smoother compared to the Covid pandemic days. To make it easier for families, Sharjah government also announced flexible remote work for female employees who have children enrolled in schools or nurseries.

The ministry first mandated distance learning from March 2, following Iran’s attacks on Gulf states, including the UAE. The measure was extended until Friday, March 6, before authorities announced an early spring break.

The graphic circulating among parents uses formatting similar to official communications, which likely contributed to confusion about its authenticity. However, it does not appear on any verified regulator platforms and is not linked to a confirmed announcement. Its original source remains unknown.

The fake image, which closely resembles the style of Ministry social media announcements, spread quickly among school communities already waiting for confirmation about whether in-person learning will resume after the current distance-learning period ends later this week

UAE Denies Distance Learning Extension Reports

UAE's Ministry of Education denied reports of extension of distance learning till May 1. The ministry clarified that this information is "inaccurate".

The authority stressed that decisions related to education will only be announced through the ministry's official channels.

Currently, distance learning is in place till April 17 across all educational institutions in the UAE for students as well as teaching and administrative staff.

"The Ministry of Education denies the accuracy of what is being circulated regarding extending the school term until 1 May 2026. It emphasises the importance of following the Ministry’s official channels, through which any updates or decisions related to the educational process will be announced,” UAE Ministry of Education mentioned.

Closing Note

Private institutions wishing to apply for a return to on-site learning should submit a formal request to the KHDA outlining the specific circumstances and providing clear justification for doing so. These requests will then be considered on a case-by-case basis and will be reviewed by the Ministry of Education.

The safety and wellbeing of students, staff and the wider community remains the key factor in the Ministry’s final decision. As authorities continue to closely monitor regional developments and assess the situation, updates will be communicated through official school channels.
