Reliance Jio made JioPC available as a standalone cloud-computing service for users across India. The service was earlier limited to JioHome broadband subscribers. You can access it regardless of your telecom or broadband provider. You just need to have a stable internet connection.
JioPC is designed to give ageing laptops and desktops access to stronger computing resources without requiring users to replace their existing hardware. The service effectively creates a virtual computer that runs through the cloud.
JioPC comes in two configurations. Both configurations run on Ubuntu Linux. The include:
A standard plan provides four virtual CPUs, 8GB RAM and 500GB cloud storage
A higher-end JioPC Ultra offers eight virtual CPUs, 16GB RAM and 1TB storage.
The company is targeting users whose computers are slow, have limited storage or struggle with newer software. Jio says, “ Even older machines can access computing resources suited to modern applications through its cloud infrastructure.”
The standard JioPC plan starts at Rs 1,000 for two months. The five-month subscription costs Rs 2,000, and the 10+2-month plan costs Rs 4,000. For two months, JioPC Ultra costs Rs 1,200x months, Rs 2,500 for five months, and Rs 5,000 for 10+2 months. With the Ultra tier you get double virtual CPU capacity. It also provides twice the RAM and storage of the standard configuration.
Jio is also positioning the service as a way to make older computers more suitable for the AI era. Cloud-based processing allows complicated workloads to run remotely instead of relying entirely on the local hardware.
JioPC does not physically make an old computer more powerful. Experts suggest that it provides access to a remote computing environment. This could be particularly relevant for students, households, professionals, and small businesses that want additional computing capabilities on a budget.
