Reddit is adding a feature that could change how conversations unfold across the platform. The company has officially launched video comments that let users upload or record short videos directly in comment sections. The feature is now rolling out across public, safe-for-work communities that choose to enable it.
The update marks one of Reddit’s biggest moves toward visual communication. For years, the platform has been defined by text-heavy discussions, long-form advice threads and community-driven conversations. Video comments now add a new layer to that experience.
Users will now see a video icon next to the existing image and GIF options in the comment box. A video can be recorded within the app or uploaded from a device gallery. Each comment can include one video along with text for context.
Reddit says videos will not autoplay. This decision keeps comment sections from turning into a constant stream of unexpected audio and motion. Every uploaded video will also pass through Reddit’s moderation and safety systems before going public.
The feature has already been tested in select communities. A video AMA hosted by Spice Girls member Mel C showed users receiving video responses to their questions.
The launch reflects a wider shift across social media platforms. Video has become a central part of online engagement. Platforms such as TikTok, YouTube and X have pushed heavily into video-first interactions, changing how users consume content.
Reddit has largely stayed focused on text discussions. This update signals that the company wants wider forms of interaction without abandoning its community-driven identity.
Video comments also open new possibilities for users sharing tutorials, demonstrations and visual explanations. A recipe tip, a makeup technique or a sports analysis can often be explained faster through video than through a lengthy text response.
Reddit is giving moderators control over whether the feature appears in their communities. Only public and safe-for-work subreddits can access video comments. Private and NSFW communities are excluded from the rollout.
This approach helps communities decide how much visual content fits their culture. Some discussion-focused forums may prefer traditional text exchanges, while hobby and entertainment communities could embrace video replies more quickly.
Reddit’s audience has often resisted major changes, especially those that alter the platform’s text-first nature. Similar concerns surfaced when GIFs and other visual tools were introduced.
However, video comments have clear advantages. They can make conversations more personal, improve AMAs and create more engaging discussions. Reddit is betting that users want more ways to express themselves while keeping community moderation at the centre of the experience.
The rollout may not transform every subreddit overnight. It does signal that Reddit sees the future of online communities as a mix of text, images and video rather than relying on a single format.
